Schmeichel Interesting Gunners
Leicester City goalkeeper is said to be on the radar of Arsene Wenger’s Arsenal side as he steps up his search for a goalkeeper having used both Wojciech Szczeny and David Ospina this season, as he looks to plot an assault on the Premier League.
The Daily Mail reports that the Gunners have turned to Schmeichel as first choice target Petr Cech looks set to sub them in favour of a move to French giants PSG.
Leicester keeper Schmeichel has been in red-hot form since returning from injury and has helped his side move away from the relegation zone in what is being dubbed the Premier League’s greatest escape, after they were seemingly cast adrift at the end of March only for them to go on a run of 6 wins in 7 league games.
Staying in the Premier League for Schmeichel will likely be a priority for the Danish International and with the Foxes looking increasingly likely to be playing top flight football next season, there will be no need for Leicester to sell. That being said if manager Wenger sees the Dane as first choice, it may be hard for the Foxes to hold to Schmeichel who will no doubt be lured by the offer of Champions League football.
James Ruled out For Long-term but King Returns
Leicester City’s Matty James looks set to be on the sidelines for anything up to a year after manager Nigel Pearson confirmed the Midfielder will need surgery on the anterior cruciate ligament injury he suffered in last Saturday’s 2-0 home win against Southampton.
James is expected to have an operation on his knee next week and will be out for the whole of pre-season as well as a good proportion of the next season, which the former Manchester United youngster will be hoping is still Premier League football.
There was some good news for the Foxes camp however, as they travel to another relegation threatened side, Sunderland at the weekend with the return of midfielder Andy King who has recovered from a calf injury and goes straight back into the squad where he will compete with Danny Drinkwater to start alongside Esteban Cambiasso this weekend.
• The Daily Telegraph are reporting that Leicester will go back in for Japan International Shinji Okazaki in the summer with an 8 million pound bid. The 29 year old Mainz striker was a reported target in the January transfer window and should they stay in the Premier League, the Foxes may turn to the striker.
• Nigel Pearson has said reports of a future call-up to the England squad for striker Jamie Vardy should be taken with a ‘Pinch of Salt’. The Independent reported that Vardy had been watched recently by members of the England backroom team but manager Pearson will be hoping to keep his striker’s feat on the ground as they look to secure Premier League survival.
