Wrexham have opened talks with Leicester City over a move for defender Harry Souttar. The renewed interest comes after Sheffield United withdrew from the race for the Australian international last week.
Discussions are now underway, though Leicester are understood to be holding firm on a £10 million asking price. The figure had previously deterred other clubs, including Sheffield United, who pulled out due to a change in transfer policy restricting them to free agents and loans.
Souttar's Leicester status
Manager Russell Martin had made Souttar his club captain for the opening games of the season. The centre-back's future, however, is ultimately subject to the club's financial considerations as they look to balance the books. Wrexham have held a long-standing interest in the 25-year-old, with links dating back to June.
Phil Parkinson's side are yet to sign a centre-back this window after allowing Thomas O'Connor and Lewis Brunt to leave. Souttar is seen as a potential fit for their back-three system, offering experience and leadership. Leicester, meanwhile, have been active in seeking defensive reinforcements following Ben Nelson's ACL injury, recently recruiting Ilari Kangasniemi from FC Inter Turku.
No breakthrough has been confirmed, and the situation could run close to next week's transfer deadline. Should Souttar depart, Leicester would likely need to re-enter the market for a partner for Caleb Okoli.
