Jannik Vestergaard has left Leicester City and retired from professional football. The 34-year-old Danish defender's departure was confirmed following a mutual termination of his contract, which had another year left to run.
He announced his decision to stop playing, explaining that his motivation had faded. Vestergaard said a feeling of satiety had crept in and it felt right to end his career now.
Vestergaard's career path
Vestergaard began his career at the Brondby IF academy before moving to TSG Hoffenheim as a teenager. He made his breakthrough in Germany and was later brought to England by Southampton. He joined Leicester City in 2021 and was part of the squad during their slide from the Premier League to League One, where the club now sits 14th with nine points from seven games.
Squad overhaul continues
His exit is part of a wider reshaping of the Leicester squad following relegation from the Championship. Players like Abdul Fatawu, Wout Faes and Jamaal Lascelles have also departed, while Harry Souttar and Caleb Okoli remain. New signing Warren O'Hora, who joined from Hibernian, is expected to feature prominently in the rebuild.
The club's recent form shows three wins from their last five matches, a run that includes a 6-1 victory over Fulham's under-21 side.
